„What do you think of this, Shari?“ Filomena spun around in a neat pirouette, showing off the sleek, bare, body-hugging white knit dress she had chosen for the cocktail party that evening.
Shari, dressed in a demure red silk dress that highlighted her shining blond hair, leaned in the doorway and stared in mingled admiration and astonishment.
The white dress left very little of Filomena to the imagination. The front plunged nearly to the navel, and the back dipped almost to the waist. The skirt was short, exposing a considerable amount of leg, which Filomena had emphasized with a pair of impossibly high heels. There was an innocent gold necklace around the throat, which somehow only served to heighten the outra-geousness of the rest of the dress.
„Every time you dress for a party around here, the outfit gets wilder and wilder. There was that little blue number with the tight bodice you wore for the replay of the prom party that exposed half your bosom. The splashy little red-and-yellow number you wore to my ‘farewell to singlehood’ party raised even the caterer’s eyebrows. And then there was the green jersey, which, as Aunt Agnes observed, exposed half your backside. Now this. What are you trying to do? Prepare us for a bridesmaid dress made out of clear plastic food wrap? I’m traumatized at the thought of what you’re actually going to wear to my wedding.“
Filomena made a face at her sister. „Don’t be a prude, Shari. You may have decided to come back to live in Gallant Lake, but your tastes are no more small-town than mine are these days. This dress is considered very hot this season.“
„It shows an awful lot of skin, Fil,“ Shari said dubiously. „It’s cute on you, I’ll grant you that, but I’m not sure it’s right for a Gallant Lake cocktail party. That green jersey thing was about as much as this town can take in the way of high style.“
„Nonsense.“ Filomena paused in front of the mirror to check her hair. She had caught it up in a deceptively casual little twist on the top of her head. Several curling red tendrils trailed down her throat. „I’m sure Gallant Lake society will be able to handle the impact.“
„What about Trent?“
„Hmm?“ Filomena clipped on dangling, glittery earrings. „What about him?“
„Is he going to be able to handle the impact?“
Filomena frowned at her sister in the mirror. „You don’t think he’ll like the dress?“
„I think that man is rapidly developing a streak of possessiveness where you’re concerned. I’m not so sure he’s going to want Brady Paxton and everyone else ogling you tonight.“
Filomena paused in the act of applying her lipstick. „I haven’t made a habit of letting any man tell me what I can and can’t wear for the past nine years, Shari. I’m not about to start now. Besides, Trent isn’t a small-town type, either.
He isn’t going to be upset about this dress.“
Shari smiled knowingly. „We’ll see.“
Filomena narrowed her eyes. „What could he do except
